matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs.

BRAAQ
(BRIAN SHIELDS) (1951 - 1997). He was born in 1951 in Liverpool and held his first
exhibition in 1974. He died in 1997 age 46, leaving a
contribution to the art world which ranks him among the
leading artists of the North West England. Due to his
artistic talent at school his nickname is a misspelling of the
famous French artist Braque. Brian's paintings are based
in a humorous way on his childhood and he frequently painted
himself as a boy wearing a striped jumper.

JAMES LAURENCE ISHERWOOD. He was born in Wigan, England and is widely regarded as
one of the best impressionist / expressionist painters. His
best work being between the late 50's up until the late
80's

TERENCE CUNEO (1907 - 1996). He was fascinated by trains and engineering subjects.
Terence was the official artist for the Coronation painting
for Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and the Queen commisioned him
to paint regal equestrian portraits.

ARTHUR DELANEY. He
paints street scenes and industrial landscapes capturing the
atmosphere of the 1930's. His inspiration was his childhood
and L S Lowry.

EDWARD MORTELMANS. He
received a Diploma in 1949 a prizeman in drawing, etching and
painting. Edward has produced work for most of the bigger
British companies, the Central Office of Information and most
of the Ministries. In 1951 he was represented at the South
Bank Exhibition. He moved into the field of book illustration
and now concentrates on Fine Art.

GEOFFREY KEY. Geoffrey lives and works in the North West of England
and is widely regarded as an important British artist with a
international following.

RALPH SWEENEY. He was
born in Manchester in 1956 and took up painting in the early
nineties. Ralph is completely self taught and his work covers
a variety of different subjects.

JOHN McCOMBS (R.O.I. R.B.A. F.R.S.A.
M.A.F.A.). He was born in 1943
and studied painting at St Martin's College of Art in London.
His work is displayed in private collections all over the
world and in the North West at manchester City Art Gallery.
John works mainly in oils, he paints both landscapes
and figures. He concentrates on the Pennine landscape centred
in and around the village of Delph in Saddleworth.

THEODORE MAJOR (1908 -
1999). He was born in Wigan,
Lancashire. He attended the local art school in 1927 and
taught there between 1930 - 1950. Theodore was highly
regarded in the art world and he exhibited with L
S Lowry on numerous occasions. He painted in a wide range
of styles from still life and oil paintings to pastel
works.

HAROLD RILEY. He was
born in Salford in 1934. At the age of 11 he sold his first
picture to the City Art Gallery. He won a scholarship to the
Slade at the age of 17 and went on to study in Florence and
Spain before returning to Salford. He has been awarded honary
doctorates by the Universities of Salford, Manchester,
Florence and Italy. As a student he and L S Lowry worked
on a project to record the area and its people, which he
continued until the end of the twentieth century. His work
depicts Salford life in paintings, drawings and photographs.
Harold has been commissioned to paint a number of portraits
these include Prince Phillip, Pope John Paul and the United
States presidents John Kennedy and Gerald Ford. His sporting
works, especially football and golf are also very sought
after. Granada TV have recently ran a series
about his life and work.

TOM DODSON. Tom
Dodson was born in Ordsall Salford the eldest of five
children. His work is centered around his early life and
memories. His family commitments prevented him from
becoming a professional artist until his retirement when his
work was immediately recognised as being of a very high
standard.
